Flying solo with a baby | 5 essentials
08:15
Heading to the airport alone, with little L (9 months
old) is not really my idea of fun, but here are 5 things that will help make the
journey that little bit more manageable.
1. A compact stroller.
After already doing 2 trips with the Bugaboo Chameleon
(& another trip with only a baby carrier (what was I thinking?) I really
can't contain my excitement for my new purchase - the Baby Zen Yoyo. A weeee bit
on the pricey side, yes, but for the amount of traveling that we do, I think
it's a great investment. It's unbelievably lightweight & is so compact you
can even take it onboard the plane with you - no more hanging around waiting at
the other end! ;-)
The ONLY criticism I have is that it doesn't have a huge
amount of space for a decent sized changing bag, so I'll be trading mine - &
my hand bag - in for a back pack.

2. A back pack.
Back packs are everywhere just now so you won't be short
of options... I'm actually not really a fan but H&M (always a winner!) have
some decent ones in just now. This black one is not only ideal, it's not ugly
either - bonus! It has enough space for all baby's flight essentials (don't
forget to pack a few things to keep them entertained) and there's also 2 zipped
pockets at the front for little bits & bobs, ie. a copius amount of dummies
& rice cakes...

3. A cross body passport
holder / purse.
I use this not only when traveling but all the time - I
love it - it literally has enough space for your passports, phone & not much
else, so you won't end up overloading. It's so handy for keeping the essentials
in, especially when you have your arms full carrying a little one & don't
have time to be fishing around a Mary Poppins sized bag looking for passports or
bank cards.

4. A baby
carrier.
This is probably
the most essential thing I think you will need when travelling alone with a
baby.
To
keep my hands free, I use the Boba baby wrap. I think it's the perfect baby
carrier, (once you've got the hang of how to actually get it on...) I love that
once it is on, I don't have to mess around with
straps & fasteners etc... plus it's so comfy for both of us.
(If you have an
older baby, who can hold themselves up, you can even get away with using a
scarf, just tie the scarf across your body from shoulder to hip and then sit
baby on your hip - I learned this trick from a friend of mine & use it most
days!)

**This pic was
taken when L was around 2 months old, now I wear the wrap to the side, carrying
him on my hip**
5.
Prepare.... & don't over pack.
Be
prepared - Ha! I know that's such a 'mumsy' thing to say (I am literally
sounding more like my mum everyday) but it's true. Before having L, I would be
throwing everything I need into my suitcase the day before... those days are
long gone! The more organised you are, the less stressed out you will feel on
the day. I start packing as early as possible so I have time to double check I
have everything I need. And you might think you need to take 10 of everything -
just incase - but you don't, be realistic and think what you use normally day to
day & then throw in a few extra options.
